EVENTS ARCHIVE 2006/2007:

Woodlands Festival at Lochgilphead  In the heartland of ancient Scotland, a celebration of access and inclusion in the woods of mid-argyll  History, habits, land-use, wild-life and mythology, in three beautiful locations.  Four days of festivities, woodcraft, walks, orienteering, story-telling, and music in and around Lochgilphead, with provision for all needs, abilities and ages.  With exhibits and sales and refreshments.  Gaelic interpretation. Sign language.  No admission fees.

Sunday August 26  12-6pm - Woodcraft and Orienteering and Woodland Management and History of Forestry at Kilmory Woodland Park (Argyll and Bute Council HQ) on approach to Lochgilphead (A83 from Glasgow)

Monday August 27  10-5pm - Woodcraft and Arts and Walks and Stories at Barnluasgan Forest Reserve, seven miles West of Lochgilphead (A83, A816, B841 Crinan Canal road, then 1 mile South of Canal on B8025)

Tuesday August 28  10-4pm - Grand Opening of Blarbuie Woodland at Argyll and Bute Hospital, with Crafts and Music and Guided Walks.  Argyll and Bute Hospital, Blarbuie Road, Lochgilphead (A83 from Glasgow) - turn right up the hill at Parish Church at top of the town, park in Visitors Car Park of Mid Argyll Community Hospital or in Car Park of Argyll and Bute Hospital just beyond.

Tuesday August 28  5-8pm - Orienteering and Woodland Management at Kilmory Woodland Park, Lochgilphead – as Sunday.

Wednesday August 29  10-5pm - Event at Barnluasgan, as Monday – sawing, splitting, shaving, singing, stories, seeing, strolling, sitting, signing, scenery, squirrels, sprites and spirits and spectres….

Interpretation Conference in Aviemore - For those of you interested in the heritage of your woodlands, Interpret Scotland and the Association for Heritage Interpretation are jointly hosting The Vital Spark, an international conference about heritage interpretation in its many guises. It will take place at the Aviemore Highland Resort from Sunday 30 September to Wednesday 3 October, 2007

Touchwood Festival 2007  Friday, Saturday  01/06/2007 till 02/06/2007 at Highland Football Academy, Ross County Football Club, Victoria Park Stadium Dingwall Ross-shire IV15 9QZ

A new two-day festival showcasing all that's good in terms of the Highland's trees, woods, forests and environment. It will highlight the social, environmental and economic elements of our natural environment and provide a fresh platform to showcase new and existing products and services thus enhancing the public's awareness of their existence. As well as featuring timber and its many better known uses the Festival will also highlight alternative energy potential and a wide range of other non timber forest products. Also held at Jubilee Park in Dingwall.

Highland Environment Network Conference 07  Saturday 12 May 2007 in Grantown on Spey - the focus will be on Environmental Arts and the day will offer opportunities for hands-on training in a wide range of particular arts projects for schools and communities.  Much more detail to come in the spring edition of An Arainneachd.  If you would like to have some input into helping to organise the conference or have particular suggestions for activities on the day - please contact HEN

Conference at University of Stirling June 2007 “Tools & Techniques for Pastoralism and Wildlands”

The conference aims to broaden our thinking and challenge our dogma over land
management practices which meet nature conservation objectives for individual
nature reserves, farms and woods as well as for whole landscapes.  The
conference is being held at the University of Stirling on 12-14 June 2007.
Highlights of the conference will include: a keynote address from

Dick Balharry (John Muir Trust), presentations by over a dozen leading practitioners from the UK and Europe and field visits to some wild and inspirational sites.at lunch time Thursday 14th June.
The cost will be confirmed by the end of December but will be around
£250 and provisional bookings (names and contact details) are being taken now.

ELAV in Orkney  6-9th September 2006                                Delivering the benefits of community  involvement in forestry    A reminder that the East Sutherland focused ELAV project (Enhancing Local Activity and Values from forest land) is having its international conference in Stromness, Orkney. Art in Caithness - Caithness Arts Week 2006, will run from 16th - 24th September. Linda Hutton, the new Caithness Arts Festival Co-ordinator, is co-ordinating the programme, and is keen to be contacted by groups of individuals who have an event which could be part of this week. Reforesting Scotland in Fife  RS Gathering, Falkland, Fife 6th to 8th October An early warning that this years RS gathering, Low Energy Living and Stewardship of Land - 15 years of Reforesting Scotland, will be happening in and around Falkland in October.  There are a wealth of exciting RS inspired and inspiring projects and groups around Fife to visit at and the theme will hopefully build on the huge success of the Stewardship event at Falkland Palace (which RS, and NHFT took part in. See News above) earlier this month.

CWA in Sunart - Community Woodland Association Conference, Strontian, 10 - 12 November  An early warning that this years conference entitled: Growing Confidence - Building a Future and will take place in Strontian, Lochaber in November.  The theme is Working in Partnership which will demonstrate the value in developing networks and partnerships with agencies, community groups and local authorities but will feature affordable housing, building in timber and Forest Schools.  More information will be available over coming months (see www.community-woods.org.uk/).
