Woodland Establishment

NHFT assists community groups and common grazings with new woodland establishment and regeneration projects. All our services are provided free, and there is no obligation to proceed following the report and proposals stage.

Following an approach by an interested group, we arrange a meeting, preferably on-site, to discuss the project and the objectives of the potential applicant. If practical we would then aim to produce a site survey report and costed proposals to meet the objectives of the proposer, and give advice on funding.  We will then support the group in taking the project forward, with the preparation of a Scottish Forestry Grant Scheme application or other funding support and liaison with Forestry Commission Scotland and its statutory consultees.

Since 1993, NHFT, and its forerunner the North West Sutherland Native Woodland Project, have carried forward over 110 WGS (Woodland Grant Scheme) or SFGS (Scottish Forestry Grant Scheme) projects, covering a total of more than 2000 hectares and representing total grant aid of over £4 million.

Individual schemes range in size from 0.45 hectare to over 100 hectares; the majority of new planting schemes have been for new native woodlands, however, we are happy to assist with plans for the establishment of any combination of species.
